Stable Transfections?

I have been harping about how viruses and bacteria may have been used to help create primitive eukaryotic cells (like fungi), which in turn were used to create more sophisticated eukaryotic cells such as our own.  Great theory, but where are the facts other than what is posted in this blog? Well, they are hiding in plain site all over the internet and in libraries throughout the world.  Let me cite one “early” example here.  If you’re not a scientist, you might want to skip this reference and abstract and read what’s below it.

Conjugation between bacterial and mammalian cells. Waters, V., Nat Genet 29, 375–376 (2001)

Abstract

Bacterial conjugation, in which DNA is transferred from one bacterium to another, was first reported in 1946 and found to be mediated by the F factor1. Although the F and RK2/RP4 prototypic plasmids can mediate the transfer of DNA from bacteria to yeast2, there has been no evidence of classical bacterial conjugation to higher eukaryotes. Here, I present evidence of such transfer, using Escherichia coli, the RK2 plasmid system and Chinese hamster ovary CHO K1 cells.

If you’re not a research scientist, let me translate this “shop talk” for you. The notion that bacteria can transfer genes directly into cells such as our own can actually occur. I’m not talking about billions, millions, thousands, or hundreds of years ago. I’m not even talking about decades, years, months, or even weeks. Scientists can witness bacterial transfer of DNA with days, well within the natural lifespan of a human witness. Not only can they witness it, they do it on a routine basis!  But this goes even further via a process called stable transfection.  In a nutshell, this means that bacterial DNA can be incorporated directly into the nucleus of a mammalian nucleus where it becomes part of the genome.  There you have it!  No theory here, no conjectures, no snake oil.  If this can happen in the laboratory, it can happen in nature.  Man did not invent stable transfection any more than he invented alcohol.  He simply took advantage of it as a laboratory tool.

Now some people are suggesting that fungal cells may promote cancer in pancreatic cells.  Perhaps they do, evidence seems to suggest so.  However, another possibility may also exist: The genetic remnants of similar “fungal” cells may already reside within the pancreatic nuclei as a normal part of the genome, something akin to stable transfection. Such “cells” were subjugated long ago via endosymbiosis, losing most if not all of any genetic material not required for the maintenance of the endosymbiotic relationship. However, they may retain enough of their original genome to become activated by an outside infection, resulting in a futile but deadly attempt to revert back into autonomous cells with the capacity for independent replication.  Instead, what occurs is pancreatic cancer.  Killing off the external infection may cause this process to halt. Take a look at the microphotograph below of a mouse L-1210 cancer cell and tell me what you “see”.

Now take a look at the model below of a series of endosymbionts connected together by sub mitotic spindles which normally function together as a composite spindle. The red section of the model represents a subcomponent of endosymbionts which have replicated outside the cell cycle in response to some environmental influence. In other words, this cell is now cancerous.
